Gareth TYSON是香港科技大學（廣州）的助理教授。主要研究領域為互聯(lián)網測量領域、網絡和社會計算。他使用經驗方法來評估這些系統(tǒng)的屬性，在此基礎上提出設計創(chuàng)新。多次在SIGCOMM、SIGMETRICS、WWW、INFOCOM和IMC等場合發(fā)表文章。曾在2013年獲得了Brendan Murphy紀念青年研究員獎；2018年獲INFOCOM的最佳演講獎和網絡會議的榮譽提名獎（軌道上的最佳論文）；2019年獲eCrime的最佳論文獎；2020年獲網絡會議的最佳學生論文獎；2021年獲WOAH的Hateful Memes共享任務獎以及QMUL的學院研究卓越獎；2022年成為CoNEXT的杰出TPC成員；2023年獲IRTF應用網絡研究獎。曾在許多頂級會議的組織和程序委員會任職，包括ACM SIGCOMM、SIGMETRICS、WWW和IMC。

講座內容：

The "Fediverse" has recently seen a renewed momentum, with a number of Fediverse platforms like Mastodon gaining increasing traction (partly due to the controversial acquisition of Twitter by Elon Musk). These platforms offer alternatives to traditional 'centralised' web platforms like Twitter and YouTube by enabling the operation of web infrastructure and services without centralised ownership or control. They do, however, raise several key systems challenges related to performance, security and resilience. In this seminar, I will present some recent work evaluating and building decentralized web services, focusing on the challenges encountered in-the-wild. The presentation is based on several papers recently published at SIGCOMM, SIGMETRCS, IMC and WWW.
